Desert Lotus is a lighting product that combines a mixture of natural elements, artisanal craftsmanship and technology. The lotus consists of three petals that open and close independently. Each petal contains a unique salt crystal tile, patterned with natural forces during its formation and calcification. The salt is extracted from an Egyptian Oasis, where it is one of its Bedouin community’s main cultural revenues. The salt tiles are translucent and emit an ambient light when back lit. The woodwork is individually handcrafted from recycled wood by an artisanal carpenter to achieve its delicate edges. Desert Lotus highlights the characteristics of this natural element in an interactive way, by designing and programming the Lotus to light up through a mobile application and light sensor. With that, it is alive and responsive to its surrounding, allowing each user to have a personalized lighting experience.
Desert Lotus demonstrates the conceptualization of a product starting with a renewable material and formally working with the idea of modular triangulations. The branding, identity and fonts were designed to complement the natural undertones of the product with an edgy and contemparay feel. It has been exhibited in Paris Design Week and Beirut Design Fair.
